A Bite to Eat

A Bite To Eat at Chifley shops is a bit of a Canberra institution, it’s been around for years. It has changed hands over time but the quintessentially vintage feel remains strong and it is like something you would find in Melbourne. It is jam-packed with mismatched vintage furniture which makes you feel like you’ve stepped into someone’s lounge room. It is extremely welcoming and you immediately feel comfortable.
For those like me, you will be pleasantly surprised by the change to table service from the old days of ordering everything at the counter. It became a pet peeve for many Canberrans, with the constant need to jump up from your table every time you needed a coffee broke the mood. I like the addition of table service, even if on the day we visited for breakfast they were short-staffed. It was pretty funny watching the chefs delivering the food and I had the distinct impression that a waiter/waitress had slept in. The staff that they did have did a fantastic job though and I was incredibly grateful that it wasn’t me.
A Bite To Eat have a pretty adventurous menu. With their breakfast menu hosting dishes such as a breakfast burrito, chocolate brioche French toast with burnt orange and vanilla parfait, or the ‘Chuck Norris’ big brekkie with everything under the sun including weisswurt, beans, bacon and lentil cakes (a definite heart attack). My dining partner and I opted for the conservative options of the Matador omelette with mushrooms and the Quack Madame toasted sandwich with ham, Gouda and a fried duck egg. My omelette bizarrely came out served in a frying pan which I wasn’t really down with. It was quirky but a little inconvenient. But overall the food was really yummy and we hope to go back for the more unusual dishes sometime soon. We washed it all down with good coffee made with Piazza Doro beans and all in, it was an excellent breakfast out.
Our next step is to head down for lunch, dinner, Wednesday night pizza or their Sunday afternoon music and tapas. Their other menus look equally inviting and with so many wonderful dining options to choose from we will be back really soon.
